Mr. Tong

Child of War, Son of Angels, Curtis W. Tong

In preparation for discussion ponder the following questions and complete in 2-3 typewritten pages the writing prompt.

Questions to Ponder:
-how was Curt’s experience different from his sisters’?
-did the relative freedom that he had at times in Camp Holmes make him more
or less safe?
-who was the biggest influence on his life in the Camp?
-in a crowded camp was he alone or overwhelmed by humanity?
-what event do you think had the largest impact on his later life?
-did the camp prevent the Tong’s from being a family?

Writing Prompt: Write a letter addressed to Curt Tong…based on your read of the memoir relay to him whom you think are the “heroes” in the internment camp. Comment upon whether you think that the Japanese prison guards were the enemy or fellow victims in a World War? Reflect upon how you think you would react if you were placed in “Curt’s shoes”. In addition, please ask him any questions that you might have based upon the book…ps. I intend to mail the letters.
In the prompt, be sure to illustrate your points and assertions with specifics from the text!
